Biography / Trivia
Troels Folmann has developed an emotional and epic orchestral style in his video game works. Having started out scoring a variety of MODs for his friends, he was eventually asked to score the commercial video game release Robin Hood: Defenders of the Crown in 2003. He offered an swashbuckling overworld theme and several folk-influenced compositions. He subsequently worked on Velvet Assassin and The City of Metronome around 2005, but both projects were greatly delayed. Nevertheless, he was able to receive recognition with the industry with a score for the major title Project: Snowblind. He was invited to score this game in order to analyse game music production for his doctorate studies so took a very academic approach.
Folmann is best known for being the main composer of the Tomb Raider games that have been developed by Crystal Dynamics in San Francisco. For 2006's Tomb Raider: Legend, he offered a dynamic mix of orchestral, electronic, and world music influences. Given the project was part of his studies, he took an academic process to scoring once again and introduced the concept of micro-scoring in order to enhance the adaptivity of in-game music. Given the score's tremendous recognition, Folmann was chosen to handle the audio of the remake Tomb Raider: Anniversary as well. He made strong musical references to Nathan McCree's score to Tomb Raider while elaborating on the music to match the musically complex and technologically commanded game scores of recent times.
Away from video games, Folmann's orchestrations have featured in trailers for blockbusters such as Spider-Man 3 and The Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. He has also offered compositions for music production libraries such as Epic Score and SoundVentures and has consulted and developed sample libraries for Tonehammer, East West, and Quantum Leap. As one of the most signfiicant academics in game music, Folmann has also given lectures such as at the Game Developer's Conference. Folmann most recently dedicated a month to scoring the beautifully developed main theme for Tomb Raider: Underworld. He directed Colin O'Malley to compose the rest of the score. It is also expected that his music for Velvet Assassin will reemerge in 2009.
