Biography / Trivia

Sam Hulick is a game music composer best known for his work on Mass Effect. He began composing so-called new age music when 18 with a simple workstation. He gained experience composing orchestral music from the age of 24 with the goal to work in the entertainment industry In 2003, Hulick won an amateur songwriting contest organised by the Game Audio Network Guild (G.A.N.G.) and had his composition performed live at San Jose's Game Developer's Conference. As a direct result, he was hired by Tommy Tallarico Studios to contribute several tracks to the Ghosts 'n Goblins adaptation Maximo vs. Army of Zin.

Following his debut, Hulick continued to compose music for independent productions. However, he only worked on one other video game, Battle Carry, over the subsequent few years. In January 2007, he joined the score of Bioware's Mass Effect alongside Jack Wall. He didn't manage to contribute quite as much as he initially intended given delays in the cutscene music assignment, but still produced 30 minutes of music for the title. He uniquely hybridised science-fiction influenced electronic music with a modern orchestral palette to positive acclaim.

In the near future, Hulick will release his solo album Dreams & Puzzles. It will be feature solo piano works and electronic-classical fusions and, in contrast to his game works, is intended to inspire meditation rather than be thematically memorable. He is also currently working on the web-based multiplayer card battle game Rise & Ruin due for release in 2009. He is also likely to reunite with Jack Wall to score Mass Effect 2 given game developers have expressed their intention to maintain the distinctive musical style for subsequent games in the series.
