Biography / Trivia

Mikael Sandgren is a composer for video games, advertisements, and films best known for his work on the Command & Conquer and NBA series. Growing up in Sweden, he took a degree in Civil Engineering, but decided after graduating to become a musician full time. After a few years as a singer in Sockholm and composing for Swedish Mekano Film & TV, he took a degree in jazz at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. After graduating in 1991, he considered becoming an assistant songwriter, but decided that soundtrack editing would be a more useful path.

Since 1993, Sandgren worked on sound effects editing, dialogue editing, and sound design for a range of Hollywood film and TV project. His works included Body of Evidence, Dazed and Confused, The Cure, Wild Side, Boltneck, and numerous lesser-known movies. These projects introduced him to contacts needed to ensure a more prominent place in the industry. Following a breakthrough editing a 1997 Miramax production, he also took on music editing roles on films like At Sachem Farm, Guinevere, Memento, and Hellraiser: Hellworld.

From 1999, Sandgren worked at the Soundelux Design Music Group and composed chiefly for video games and advertisements. He has collaborated with Bill Brown on projects like Quake III: Arena, Freedom: First Resistance, Shadow Watch, and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Red Arrow. He has also led music production on projects like Freedom: First Resistance, Combat Flight Simulator 2, and Sony's annual NBA titles. Since leaving the company, he has achieved most recognition for his work on the Command & Conquer series, having been specially selected to work on Generals, Kane's Wrath, and Red Alert 3.

Between his video game roles, Sandgren has composed advertisements for Sony, Nokia, Holiday Inn, Budweiser, Ameriquest, and BMW. He has found it difficult to establish himself as a film composer given he believes it depends chiefly on one's contacts rather than musical abilities. He nevertheless believes he has something unique to offer from the orchestral game music of celebrity composers due to his use of electronic and jazz music. He has currently composed Rancid, A Sharp, and Crescent Heights in the hope that it will introduce him to bigger projects.
