Biography / Trivia

Lawrence Schwedler is audio director at the Redmond-based first-party developer Nintendo Software Technology acclaimed for his stylistically and technologically accomplished scores for numerous popular series. Passionate about music from an early age, he eventually became a fan of modernist art music by composers such as Stravinsky and Schoenberg. He graduated with a master's degree in classical guitar performance from UCLA and eventually decided to become a video game composer. He debuted the industry in 1995 scoring Multimedia Celebrity Poker alongside legendary Might and Magic composer Rob King.

Schwedler subsequently joined video game developer The Dreamers Guild in 1995. For I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, he added haunting ambience to the game's scenarios creating sound effects with James Phillipsen. He gained further experience as the lead composer and sound designer of Dinotopia, credited as assistant producer because of the size and importance of his role. His final work at the company was Halls of the Dead: Faery Tale Adventure II. On both of these projects, he worked alongside sound effects designer and co-composer James Phillipsen once again. However, both were left unemployed when The Dreamers Guild went bankrupt in 1997.

Shortly afterwards, Schwedler joined the new American subsidiary Nintendo Software Technology. His first project was 1999's Bionic Commando: Elite Force, where he crafted an acclaimed score in the spirit of its classic predecessors. Less praised were his more radical attempts to bring Crystalis into the next century. He was later sound director for Ridge Racer 64 and Pokémon Puzzle League, externally scored by Keith Arem and John Loeffler respectively. In 2001, he worked on the audio for Wave Race: Blue Storm, creating a diverse score featuring carefully adapted music for each environment. Given the requirement to create 100 pieces, he decided to recruit James Phillipsen as a co-composer for the project.

In 2003, Schwedler led the audio for 1080 Avalanche, modernising the series with improved sound quality and some licensed hip-hop music. He has since created the acclaimed light-hearted scores for the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series. Other projects include the technologically commanded electronic score for Ridge Racer DS and the immersive atmospheric accompaniment to Metroid Prime: Hunters. He has also acted as an audio advisor on projects such as Chibi-Robo, Crosswords DS, and The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition. His next major project is likely the much-delayed Project HAMMER.
