Biography / Trivia
Kai Rosenkranz is a game designer and composer at German developer Piranha Bytes. He became involved with the development of their 2001 RPG Gothic even before graduating from high school. Having told the company that he was an all-rounder happy to work on various aspects of game design, he was assigned multiple roles on this production. Although his composing role was relatively small, he was also responsible for visual special effects, sound effects, tools programming, and web design on the title for the title. These components embellished a large and inviting world nevertheless full of danger. The commercial and critical success of the title secured the future of the developer and Rosenkranz became a senior employee there.
For 2003's Gothic II, Rosenkranz adopted the role of audio director. He was responsible for the composition, sound effects, and sound design in addition to several non-audio roles. Deeply influenced by the visual inspiration of the game, Rosenkranz's understated orchestral pieces added to the atmosphere of the title and the score was technologically accomplished overall. After a spell studying psychology at university, Rosenkranz took the soundtrack of 2005's Gothic 3 one step further by recording it with the Bochum Symphony Orchestra. The resultant score featured epic and fantastical elements and was made more accessible and meaningful with the use of subtle recurring themes.
Rosenkranz will not score Gothic 4 as it is developed by SpellBound Entertainment. Producer Jochen Hamma has said that the new composer will carefully follow and develop the effective style adopted for the first three games. Rosenkranz will meanwhile compose Piranha Bytes' new fantasy RPG Risen die for release in 2009. He wants to define a unique musical style for the game by taking new approaches to instrumentation and arrangement. The soundtrack will incorporate faster drums, galic nuances, and various western effects. Rosenkranz's music, sound design, and early non-audio roles have been essential for the success of Piranha Bytes and the Gothic series.
