Biography / Trivia

Jean-Luc Escalant is a French musician and composer who had a short video game career at Infogrames during the '90s. Born in Lyon in 1963, the self-taught guitarist played in various rock bands in Tours during his youth while training as an aircraft mechanic in the army. He experienced some success with bands "Les Cougars" and "Delphine et les Hommes", which played in a number of festivals and on national television as well as releasing a number of albums.

Escalant was introduced to Infogrames by Jocelyn Valais, a bandmate and game graphic designer. While not particularly enthusiast about computers and video games, he accepted the job offer nonetheless. His first task was to adapt the music from the Disney film Beauty and the Beast for the PC game that was released in France in 1993. His good work lead him to score another game developed by the company, Alone in the Dark 2. With more creativity freedom this time, he composed the AdLib soundtrack on guitar while drawing inspirations from Irish music. While he would have preferred to record it live for the CD release of the game, the lack of budget did not make it possible to achieve. Still, this release featured enhanced studio-mixed MIDI-based music.

Following his short-lived involvement in the gaming industry, Escalant worked on a few short films by Eric Doireau and musicals. He currently works in managing the computer systems of a company specialized in biotechnology production. Musically, he continues to play in a band with friends.
