Biography / Trivia
Entering the industry in the summer of 2002, Emerson-Johnson's first game project was to assist Clint Bajakian on composition and acting as part copyist for the award-winning orchestral score to Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb. His qualities as an audio and music craftsman were recognized at the G.A.N.G. 2004 awards, receiving the "Rookie of the Year" award. Subsequent works consisted mostly of sound designing and non-compositional music tasks, although he worked again with Bajakian by co-scoring The Bard's Tale in 2004. The relation he developed through the mentoring received from the former LucasArts music team, which he cited as the main inspiration for his adventure game scores, brought him more work opportunities on prolific titles such as God of War and Psychonauts.
Beginning to fly on his own, 2005 saw his first score entirely written on his own, TellTale's Bone: Out from Boneville. This was the start of a long, and still ongoing, relationship with the developer. In fact, he returned to score the sequel, Bone: The Great Cow Race, and all of the titles in the two episodic Sam & Max seasons. The wild and diverse worlds presented in the Sam & Max series gave him the opportunity to write a highly eclectic collection of music, including the soundscape to parodies of TV shows, the Italian mafia, a virtual world (with faux NES tunes), the Moon, the North Pole, Hell, and more. While the moods and styles vary throughout the series, the recurring genre is definitely jazz. Another genre explored by the composer so far is electronic on Totally Games' Alien Syndrome (2007).
Besides working in the gaming industry, Emerson-Johnson write music for film, TV, advertising, and theatrical productions and is a teacher of musical theater and opera performance. He also performs himself in various bands, classical ensembles, operas, and plays.
Fans of LucasArts music should definitely follow this young composer with a bright future in the medium.
"Part of the reason I love working in game audio is the variety of musical needs from project to project." -Jared Emerson-Johnson, The International House of Mojo Interview
