Biography / Trivia
Jack Wall is a game music composer famous for several high-profile cinematic orchestral scores and his role on Video Games Live. Despite taking a degree in civil engineering, Wall decided to become a musician after having a role in a rock band. Moving from Philadelphia to Boston to New York, Wall ended up working as a sound engineer for John Cale and others. Eventually deciding to branch out into composition, he was offered to work on some game projects in 1995 shortly after getting married. His early composition and sound design projects including Vigilance, Flying Saucer, and 10Six.
In 2000, Wall joined Tommy Tallarico Studios. This led to his involvement in projects such as Evil Dead: Hail to the King, Extremely Goofy Skateboarding, and The Mark of Kri. He achieved his big break in 2001 with an acclaimed score to Myst III: Exile, noted for its epic production values and haunting main theme. A year later, Wall co-founded the Game Audio Network Guild (G.A.N.G.) with Tommy Tallarico. The organisation is dedicated to providing information, instruction, and resources about game music to its fee-paying members and is known for its annual game music award ceremonies.
In 2005, Wall co-created the world concert tour Video Games Live with Tommy Tallarico. After a shaky start, the concert has achieved popular and financial success in the last couple of years with dozens of stops across the world. It has appealed to thousands of gamers with its mixture of orchestral performances, cinematic projections, lights and lasers, participation activities, and arcade exhibits. Wall's role on the show is to conduct popular video game music performed by small orchestras and choirs. He also provides executive direction and recently had a large role on the tour's CD release.
Despite his time-consuming commitments to G.A.N.G. and Video Games Live, Wall continues to be active as a game music composer. Another career landmark was his score for Myst IV: Revelation which he orchestrated and conducted for performance by full orchestra and soloists. He has since created cinematic music for Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow and Neopets: The Darkest Fairie, extensively used Asian instruments in Jade Empire, and combined orchestral and electronic elements for Mass Effect. Other roles include trailer music for Dungeon Siege II and even some minor television and film projects.
