Garry Schyman
Biography / Trivia
Garry Schyman is an American composer of video games, films, and television best known for the BioShock and Destroy All Humans! titles.
Schyman discovered his love for music at the age of 12 by playing music
from 20th century composers on his brother's piano. He decided to
pursue music as a career by studying composition at the University of
South California and taking post-graduate studies under serialism
composer George Tremblay. He got his break in the 1980s by writing
scores for American television classics such as The A-Team, Magnum P.I., and The Greatest American Hero. He first worked on video games in 1993 with the orchestral music for Voyeur. In the subsequent couple of years, he scored Voyeur II and created the cinematic music for Off-World Interceptor. However, it wasn't until nine years later that he would work in the video game industry once again.
Schyman estabblished a long-lasting partnership with Von Zerneck-Sertner Films in 1994 with his music for the television movie Mortal Fear.
He worked on several other television movies adapted from Robin Cook's
murder mystery books in the following years. He is regarded as a
significant and versatile television composer due to these works and
his participation on several other television movies, serials, and
documentaries. Schyman has also worked on a number of low profile films
such as Lost in Africa, Spooky House, Horseplayer, and Judgement.
Away from scoring, Schyman has explored his musicality by creating a
critically praised viola concerto for his own enjoyment and composing
four high profile songs performed by Matt Harding.
In 2005, Schyman returned to video games to score Pandemic Studios' third person shooter Destroy All Humans!
He created a tongue-in-cheek score tributing 1950s film music by
Bernard Herrmann and integrating the theremin. In another high-profile
project, Schyman recorded the shooter BioShock with a live
orchestra in Hollywood. Blending influences from traditional,
aleatoric, electro-acoustic, avant-garde, and romantic art music, he
created music that was at times ominous and at others shockingly
beautiful. Schyman has also continued to work closely with Pandemic Studios to compose Full Spectrum Warriors: Ten Hammers and the latest titles in the Destroy All Humans! series, including the highly successful Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon. Schyman is dedicated to creating more pioneering soundtracks to major video games in the future.
