Biography / Trivia

Daniel Pemberton is a prolific and creative composer for television, films, and video games. After producing an album of avant-garde electronic music at 16, he composed his first soundtrack a year later for a Channel 4 documentary. Since then, he has become one of the most prolific composers of British television. His works range from comedy series (Peep Show, Suburban Shootout), reality shows (Hells Kitchen, Love Island), dramas (Born With Two Mothers, The Yellow House), and documentaries (Great British Menu, Hiroshima), many of which are well-known on British screens. His soundtracks have been known for their novel use of instrumentation and incorporation of styles ranging from orchestra to jazz to electronica to folk to minimalism.

In the video game world, Pemberton was selected by Russell Shaw to create 80 pieces of music for The Movies in 2005. The game lets player act as a movie producer and director by organizing everything and then shooting a virtual movie. To go along with the various possible settings, the soundtrack includes an impressive variety of themes, all inspired from film scores ranging from orchestral to jazz to electronic to rock and more. He was subsequently selected to create the main theme and original music of the ground-breaking PlayStation 3 title LittleBigPlanet.  His well-received score featured an innovative, childish, and quirky mix of forces and styles. He also recently completed his first feature score for Big Kiss.

Away from music scores, Pemberton is known as an all-round innovator. Before his music commitments became overwhelming, Pemberton regularly wrote for magazines such as Wired and i-D and newspapers such as The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph. In addition, he was one of the founding writers on the Shoreditch Twat fanzine. He has also written the amusing clubbing guide Devil's Dandruff Guide to Nightlife fanzine and briefly published the London magazine  Good For Nothing. Now principally dedicated to television scoring, his willingness to take risks has clearly paid off, since his music has been featured in over 150 different television productions and received much public and critical praise.
