Biography / Trivia

Christopher Tin is a composer at the Soundelux Design Music Group well-known for his work on films, television, and video games such as Civilization IV. Born of Chinese descent, he is a native Californian that was educated in England. He received his undergraduate education at Stanford University where he conducted the Talisman choir at concerts including at the 1996 Summer Olympics. He also studied for a year at Oxford. He was so successful that he won a scholarship to study a Masters at the Royal College of Music where he graduated in 2000 with a top-ranked Distinction and the Horovitz Composition Prize.

Since graduating, Tin had roles such as additional composition, orchestration, and synthesizer operation on a range of films. He has worked on projects such as The Ring, X2, Lilo and Skitch 2, Shark Bait, Fishbowl, and Ghosts of the Abyss alongside high-profile Hollywood composers such as Hans Zimmer. He also composed for various prominent television programmes including Nova and commercials for Puma, Verizon, and Apple. Through these works, Tin became reputable for his melodic and momentous original compositions and lush and efficient counterpoint-layered orchestrations influenced by a mixture of European, American, and Asian musicianship.

Tin has made a gradual entrance to the video game industry as well. He achieved his breakthrough composing several themes for Civilization IV. Among his contributions was the beautiful title music "Baba Yetu" sung by Stanford's African-influenced choir Talisman. This beloved theme has been celebrated with awards by the Game Audio Network Guild and appearances on Video Games Live's concerts and CD release. He has also had composition roles on Pirates of the Caribbean Online and Toontown Online.With the hope of scoring more high-profile games, he became representated by the Soundelux Design Music Group in 2007.

Away from these works, Tin's commissions include the string quartet "Lacrymosa", a piano nocturne for Night Sings Its Song, and several other works for the Talisman choir. Tin is currently working on his debut album, Calling All Dawns. This orchestral world music project will feature 12 songs each sung in a different languages. It has been recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Talisman choir, and several eminent soloists at Abbey Road Studios. He is is also currently working on a pair of major game projects for Microsoft and Disney, though cannot currently reveal what they are.
