Biography / Trivia

Ben Cullum is an electronic solo artist who previously worked at Rare Ltd. His younger brother Jamie is one of Britain’s most lauded jazz-pop singers. While growing up in Wiltshire, England, he learnt to play multiple instruments and received vocal training. After studying for a music degree in London, he worked for a brief period as a session artist on bass guitar. Looking for more regular employment, Ben joined Rare as a sound designer in 1999.

Ben initially produced the light funk and jazz scores for the Game Boy Color‘s Mickey‘s Racing Adventure. In a similar style, he also composed the better known Mickey’s Speedway USA for the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color. He later worked alongside David Wise creating additional music on 2002’s Star Fox Adventures. Following these works, he had few other composing roles at the company given his commitments in popular music.

Ben became known for his expertise as a voice actor and voice engineer at Rare Ltd. on several projects. He voiced a diverse number of characters on Star Fox Adventures, Perfect Dark, Perfect Dark Zero, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Donkey Kong Country GBA, and Kameo: Elements of Power  On Kameo and Conker: Live & Reloaded, he was also an instrumentalist. He reprised his role as Falco in the Star Fox series on Super Smash Bros. Brawl and was later a voice actor on Activision’s The Movies in 2005.

While still working as a voice actor, Ben helped his younger brother Jamie rise to fame in 2001. Ben composed several of Jamie’s songs including the title track of his first major album Pointless Nostalgic, his debut single “There are the Days”, and the popular tracks “It‘s About Time” and “Mind Trick”. Unsurprisingly, Jamie cites his brother as his biggest influence. In other popular works, he composed tracks on Kyle Eastwood’s Now  and Ferry Corsten's L.E.F., and performed instruments on several All Saints songs.

Currently a full-time songwriter, DJ, producer, and musician, he was signed by Chrysalis Records in 2005. He has since created several electronica, progressive house, and pop compositions including the hit “Come Feel the Love”. He is currently touring with funk band The Egg as a bassist and working on their latest album. He is also working with Jamie on his new album. Aside his noteworthy video game affiliations, Ben is clearly a popular and acclaimed musician.
