Biography / Trivia
David Clynick is a sound designer at Rare Ltd. famous for scoring the Perfect Dark series. Growing up in Leicester in England, his father was a jazz saxophonist so there were many instruments in his house for him to try to play. Of all of them, a one stringed guitar was his favourite, though he also learnt to play the piano too. Later purchasing his own guitar, he participated in some rock bands during his youth. He also learnt music theory initially from textbooks and then from jazz musicians associated with his father, also later taking an Open University degree.
Clynick spent his early 20s touring the country with a five piece indie rock band Atama in a smoke-filled transit van. They were nearly signed to a major label in 1995, but their days were numbered when the lead singer tragically died. He spent the following five years writing music for skateboarding videos while living in a squat. Desiring more regular employment after experiencing the downside of being a composer, he sent out samples of his music to TV and video game production companies. Despite few other replies, he was accepted as a co-composer at Rare Ltd. in 1999.
Clynick was initially assigned to co-compose 2000's Perfect Dark relatively late in its production. Supervisor Grant Kirkhope patiently helped him to get to grips with game development tools and guided his compositional approach to fit the atmosphere of the game. By the end of the production, Clynick was responsible for about a third of the score, including the music for the Crash Site and Attack Ship levels, the additional music for the multiplayer levels, and all of the cut scenes. During his subsequent years at the company, he received little opportunity to establish himself as a composer given he was involved in some cancelled projects.
Clynick subsequently spent several years working as the sole composer of 2005's Perfect Dark Zero. He carefully expanded the stylistic basis of the first score by emphasising rock and earthy elements and expanding certain thematic elements to give a sassy and streetwise feel. He took influence from John Barry and Grant Kirkhope while explicitly rejected the stereotypical military feel of other first person shooters. There was also greater emphasis on interactivity in the title so that the music and sound effects changed accompany the action. He also exploited the greater technological freedom provided by the Xbox 360 console, also responsible for the surround mixing.
Since 2005, Clynick has focused on sound production in non-composition roles. On Kameo: Elements of Power and Conker: Live and Reloaded he was one of several instrumentalists. On Viva Piñata, Jetpac Refuelled, and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, he adopted mainly sound production and mixing roles, ironically using an Apple Mac. He has become especially reputable for his mixing work and has influenced his contemporaries to use more advanced programs. In 2008, he was also a co-composer on Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Outside Rare, Clynick is happily married and has a young daughter.
