Liner Notes

THE HITMAN LEGACY

Hitman was the first and remains the only game series that allows you to take on the role of the world's deadliest assassin, the cool and calculated Agent 47.

His is a world of crime, sin and greed, where nothing counts except the target or making the perfect hit. Players are given the freedom to carry out hits in a variety of ingenious but nevertheless ruthless ways. Hitman is designed and created in Denmark by acclaimed developers, IO Interactive.

The first in the series, Hitman: Codename 47, launched in December 2000 exclusively for the PC. In 2002, the follow up, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, delivered the franchise to a new console audience and earlier this year the third rendition, Hitman: Contracts, was launched for the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PC. The fourth in the series is due for release Summer 2005.

Expect another killer hit.

Hitman: Codename 47

I had worked with the founders of IO, the creators of the Hitman series, on many projects dating back to 1991. Working in the European demo scene with the IO guys, we started a company together in 1993 called Zyrinx. We relocated to the US and I started creating music for games. Previous game soundtracks we worked on include Subterrania, Red Zone, Scorcher & Amok.

Hitman: Codename 47 was an exciting new idea from IO Interactive. The awesome visuals helped give the game such a unique atmosphere and I wanted the music to match the cutting-edge animation and augment the game's ambience.

Each of the 5 main levels has a different set of music cues. I adopted an experimental approach to writing the score; there are epic undertones that accompany the stealth-driven action, while the more suspenseful parts are constant.

The music was written without any concept artwork or videos of the game. All I had to work with was the short background story of Mr. 47. This was a very different method compared to how the other Hitman scores were written.

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin

For Hitman 2, we wanted to give the game a cinematic, heroic atmosphere, while at the same time have the music reflect the different countries Mr. 47 visits around the world. We infused Russian, Indian, Japanese and Middle Eastern music scales and percussion to conjure the music flavors from these exotic and veried locations.

The music implementation on this game was quite diverse from the original Hitman. It was more interactive. Cues are often played once a puzzle has been solved or a specific location has been reached.

Writing music to enhance the Hitman games is always a challende and that's really why I enjoy working on this series so much. I also work closely with the team to design the music system and implement the score to ensure the soundtrack is most effective for this medium.
